MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, highly conserved small noncoding RNA molecules naturally occurring in the genomes of plants and animals. They are 17–27 nucleotides long and regulate posttranscriptional mRNA expression, typically by binding to the 3' untranslated region (3'-UTR) of the complementary mRNA sequence, resulting in translational repression and gene silencing. Many major cellular functions such as development, differentiation, growth, and metabolism are known to be regulated by miRNAs. The regulatory function of microRNA is accomplished by the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) (Figure 1).

Recently, miRNAs have been linked to many human diseases and are being pursued as clinical diagnostics and as therapeutic targets, and showing promise in many fields, ranging from cancer therapy to cardiac disease. For example, miR-21, one of the cancer-promoting 'oncomiRs', can act as a biomarker and drug target for cancer treatment. Besides, miRNA mimics and molecules targeted at miRNAs (antimiRs) have shown promise in preclinical development. Thus, it's valuable to explore the miRNA function and mechanism, then translate it into human clinical trials.
